I found a few possibilities on bridal sites and in flower girl departments, but they either looked like a wedding gown or just weren't right. When I ran across this dress on 4prom.co.uk child catalog, I wasn't sure how long it would be on her, but I thought the open skirting might have the same effect she was looking for when she asked for a dress with a train. I was a little reluctant it would look too "clubby," but I hadn't found anything else and she thought it might work.
I am soooo glad I ordered this! First, she LOVES it. She continually tells me she is "obsessed" with her new dress. She likes twirling around and whisking the skirting about in dramatic ways. The shorts are great too because it just makes it easier as she's moving around and I can pin up the skirt if I need it out of the way and she still has the shorts to cover her body. Also, my daughter NEVER wears black. She's a "girly" girl, but we got this in black anyway. She loves the black sparkle. I am sure she feels very grown-up in this and it's part of the appeal, as the color, halter, skirting and built-in shorts are more of what you'd find in trendy women's clothes. I don't mind because the dress is not in any way revealing and she really approaches wearing this as a "dress-up" sort of thing.
Quality is also good. My daughter is about to be 10 and is true to size, but I did size up so she could wear it longer. The dress' cut is such that even with the extra room, it's not so big that it's falling off. It's a little big around the arms because of sizing up (which I expected) and I'd say about an inch or so of the dress hits the floor if she's barefoot.
Also, I am normally a SUPER budget-conscious shopper. For most people, I think this price range would be acceptable; but, honestly, it is more than I normally spend because I am a true deal hunter. However, I think it is completely worth the price, not only because it met the criteria I was looking for but also because it's so darn cute! :)
